Atlantis Events, a company specialising in all-gay and lesbian cruises and resort vacations, has announced it will charter the world's largest passenger ship in January 2007 for a Caribbean cruise.

Royal Caribbean's Freedom of the Seas ship will cater for over 3000 passengers with high tech facilities once completed in Finland.

"Freedom sets a new standard in the cruise industry with innovative settings for unique guest experiences throughout," said Rich Campbell, Atlantis’s chief executive.

"Royal Caribbean has clearly raised the bar in terms of what is possible in cruising today.

"Atlantis is very proud to be able to partner with Royal Caribbean to bring the excitement of the largest ship in the world to our gay and lesbian guests," Mr Campbell said. "We'll be able to create a spectacular experience for them that fully utilises this fantastic ship with our signature entertainment and parties."

At 160,000 tons and with a capacity of 3,700 guests, Freedom of the Seas will be the largest cruise ship in the world when she enters service in June 2006. By comparison, the Queen Mary 2 displaces approximately 151,000 tons and accommodates up to 2,620 passengers. Freedom's length of 1,112 feet is nearly equivalent to four football fields laid end-to-end.

Freedom of the Seas will offer guests a top-deck aqua environment unparalleled in the industry. It will introduce four new concepts, including, an interactive water park called the H2O Zone; dramatic whirlpools cantilevered off the sides of the ship; a dedicated sports pool; and FlowRider, the industry's first-ever shipboard surf park.

The ship will also feature an ice skating rink, the largest shipboard rock-climbing wall anywhere, and the line's longest Royal Promenade, a 427-foot long interior street packed with shopping, dining and entertainment options. Her 1,817 staterooms will be some of the largest guest rooms, featuring some of the most spacious balconies in the industry.

It will also be the most digitally advanced cruise ship at sea, offering wireless technology throughout the ship for Internet and cell phone access, as well as first-in-the-industry flat-panel televisions in all staterooms and public areas.

"With all the guest amenities, innovations, and groundbreaking facilities on this spectacular ship, it's easy to see why Royal Caribbean named her Freedom," said Mr Campbell. "Our guests will have the freedom to choose a vacation that fits their own individual taste and style. And that is what an Atlantis vacation is all about."

Atlantis' Caribbean sailing on Freedom of the Seas will depart Miami on January 28, 2007, visiting San Juan, St. Maarten, and the private island of Labadee, before returning to Miami on February 4, 2007. Staterooms start at $1,049, based on double occupancy.
Atlantis will offer a record seven all-gay cruises, and two all-gay resorts in 2006, handling more guests than any other gay and lesbian tour operator. Destinations include Europe, Alaska, South America, Hawaii, Mexico's Pacific Coast, Caribbean Islands, and the Baltic.



George Michael has admitted crashing into three parked cars last weekend in North London, and will now be quizzed by police.

The gay star’s representative phoned police to report the incident after the crash was revealed by witnesses yesterday.

Michael has already made contact with the car owners to arrange financial compensation, according to the Daily Mirror.

Witnesses claim they saw the singer hit a grey Ford Fiesta on Sunday morning, and then drive off, hitting a white Peugeot and green Rover on the way.

One onlooker told the Daily Mirror, "I spotted George Michael just sitting there, staring at us. He didn't look too good for that time on a Sunday morning.

"After a while he tried to move off but shunted into the back of a Peugeot. It scraped its wheels along the kerb and then smashed into the front of a green Rover. There was another almighty crash, then he just drove off again.

"It was really bizarre. No one could quite believe what they were seeing."

Police have confirmed there was a collision involving damage to a number of cars, a Metropolitan Police spokeswoman said: "At 8.10am on Sunday police were informed of a Range Rover being in collision with a number of cars in Hornsey Lane, north London."

Michael was given a police caution for drugs possession last month after he was found slumped at the wheel of his car in Hyde Park, London.



MINNEAPOLIS - Mr. Sulu beamed down to lend support to student gay activists who tried to visit a private Christian university.

Actor George Takei, who played the helmsman in "Star Trek," made a surprise appearance Monday after a busload of Soulforce Equality Riders tried to talk about faith and gay rights with students at North Central University in downtown Minneapolis.

The 33 activists are traveling by bus to 19 U.S. colleges with religion-based policies opposed to homosexuality. They were locked out of school buildings when they arrived at North Central, which is owned and operated by the Assemblies of God.

After sitting in front of the doors for most of the afternoon, the Soulforce riders and supporters rallied at a park across the street when Takei, who recently came out as a homosexual, stopped by.

Takei, 68, said the activists' "equality trek" shares themes with those of the starship Enterprise.

"They have shown courage and character in showing that most people of faith are not extreme reactionaries who oppose equal rights," he said.

Tour organizer Jacob Reitan, 24, said the colleges they are visiting "equate homosexuality with sickness and sin. It's time to have a conversation instead of defaming our humanity."

Nate Ruch, executive director of university relations at North Central, said last week that the riders declined an offer to have a third party mediate a discussion.

Takei was in town to speak at a gay pride event at the University of Minnesota.



In a stunner of a decision, the US Supreme Court has declined without comment to take up Rev Jerry Falwell's appeal challenging a gay New York man for running a Web site that is critical of the Reverend's stance on homosexuality, among other claims.

Thirty-six year old Christopher Lamparello, identified as a gay New York man, registered his Web site under the deliberately mis-spelt name Fallwell.com in 1999.
The Web site serves as Lamparello's mouth-piece for expressing his dislike of Rev Falwell's views on homosexuality. Apparently Lamparello had seen Falwell profess anti-gay views during a television interview - the kind which say homosexuality is a sin that gays and lesbians must repent for and resist.

Fallwell.com attempts to explain "why Rev Falwell is completely wrong about people who are gay or lesbian," under a red disclaimer which actually provides a link to the Reverend's Web site.

Since the inception of Fallwell.com, Rev Falwell has been demanding the site be taken down. With Lamparello resisting giving-in, the Reverend has filed a suit against the former, claiming trademark infringement among other allegations.

In 2005 a district court did take heed of the Reverend's accusations and barred Lamparello from using the intentionally mis-spelt domain name. Subsequently though, the decision was reversed by a three-judge federal appeals court which ruled that Fallwell.com can continue to operate as it is not run for the purpose of profit and as such does not infringe the Reverend's trademark.

In the latest ruling, the Supreme Court has decided against escalating the Reverend's appeal to itself.

Judge Diana Motz in fact went to the extent of saying that Lamparello's Web site looks nothing like Reverend Falwell's site, and that Lamparello's site does not justify the Reverend's trademark infringement claims.

Lamparello's lawyer maintains that a domain name is not just the source of a Web site but also the substance of the Web site, and that one is free to criticize a person plus put their name in the domain name of his/her Web site.

Falwell's attorney however argues that this is a simple case of trademark infringement - one which has succeeded in leaving many of the Reverend's supporters "shaken".

Why Good Friday

The Meaning of Good Friday
Of the numerous Christian holy days on the liturgical calendar, Good Friday is perhaps the most solemn and profound memorial. The dates of Good Friday, which vary by calendar year, occur between March 20th and April 23rd. Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus and falls on the last Friday before Easter. It is the pinnacle of Holy Week, and Christians observe this day with great humility and reverence.

History of Good Friday
As early as the first century, the Church set aside every Friday as a special day of prayer and fasting. It was not until the fourth century, however, that the Church began observing the Friday before Easter as the day associated with the crucifixion of Christ. First called Holy or Great Friday by the Greek Church, the name "Good Friday" was adopted by the Roman Church around the sixth or seventh century.

Good Friday Origins
There are two possible origins for the name "Good Friday". The first may have come from the Gallican Church in Gaul (modern-day France and Germany). The name "Gute Freitag" is Germanic in origin and literally means "good" or "holy" Friday. The second possibility is a variation on the name "God's Friday," where the word "good" was used to replace the word "God," which was often viewed as too holy for commoners to speak.

Good Friday Traditions
Good Friday rituals and traditions are distinct from those of all other Church observances and add to Good Friday's considerable significance. The entire ceremony is somber, with priests and deacons dressing in black vestments. The pulpit and the altar are bare, and no candles are lit. The purpose behind the solemn presentation is to create an awareness of grief over the sacrifice of God's only begotten Son.

Good Friday Church Rituals
Starting anytime between midnight and 3 a.m., priests and other clerics begin to recite specific prayers. At the morning ceremony, the priest or church official recites lessons from the scriptures. Afterwards, there is a succession of prayers asking for God's mercy and forgiveness on all mankind.

At the noon hour comes the Adoration of the Cross, where a representation of the True Cross is unveiled and the clergy and laity pay homage to the sacrifice of Christ. In the Jerusalem Church, a remnant of the True Cross itself is presented for the ceremony. Next comes the Mass of the Presanctified, in which the priest or church official takes Communion from the host that was blessed during the Maundy Thursday ceremony. The ceremony concludes around 3 p.m. with a procession, which is followed by evening prayers.

In many Protestant churches, Good Friday observances begin at noon and last until 3 p.m. This coincides with the hours (according to the scriptures) that Jesus hung on the cross. These services often include sermons on the last seven phrases that Jesus spoke while being crucified. Other services include re-enactments of the Passion according to the Gospel of John, processions of the Stations of the Cross, and the singing of appropriate hymns. All observances add to Good Friday significance and to the richness of meaning for those who know the history of the observance.

To many Christians, Good Friday is felt as a day of sorrow. It is a time to grieve over the sin of man and to meditate upon the love that God has so generously bestowed upon humanity in giving His only Son for the redemption of sin.

The Conservative government, however, plans to push the touchy issue into the spotlight. Justice Minister Vic Toews has said he will introduce legislation raising the legal age of consent to 16.

Currently the law considers teens under 14 too young to consent to any kind of sexual contact _ but there is an exception for partners close in age. Toews has said any new legislation would include a similar close-in-age exemption to avoid criminalizing partners under 16.

The minister has said the aim would be to provide more protection for younger teens against adult sexual predators, especially in an age of luring via the Internet.


Three homosexual lovers from the mountains of North Carolina have been accused of castrating six consenting men - and videotaping themselves doing so.

Richard Sciara, 61, Michael Mendez, 60, and Danny Reeves, 49, who lived together in the small town of Waynesville, face charges of castration without malice, maiming without malice and practising medicine without a licence.

Officers seized a plastic container from their freezer full of human testicles. They also found prosthetic testicles, a coffee can with bloody scalpels, a silver tin marked "used instruments", syringes and a video camera and tripod.

The items were found in a room the men referred to as "the dungeon".

The suspects told investigators the procedures were completely consensual and the men who requested them travelled long distances to have them carried out.

North Carolina's state law on castration, which dates back to colonial times, does not admit consent as a defence.

The six victims identified so far are not from North Carolina and at least one is from outside the country, lawyers said.

If convicted, the men face 12- to 15-year prison sentences. The case is scheduled to go before a grand jury in a fortnight.

Canada's Breakthrough Entertainment, the company behind kids series Atomic Betty, is teasing international buyers with the first glimpse of its next toon, one it is billing as "the first gay animated sitcom."

Buddy's is based on the character of Buddy Cole, made famous by Canadian comedian Scott Thompson in the Kids in the Hall series and film, and is in development with Canadian pubcaster CBC and US gay and lesbian channel Here!.

Breakthrough Entertainment head of distribution Tanya Kelen described Buddy as "a cross between Oscar Wilde and Bugs Bunny" and said that the series will be ready for Mipcom.

The gay market is something Breakthrough is familiar with thanks to its sexy soap Paradise Falls, which features gay characters. "Paradise Falls sold so well in the gay niche market that we think many of those partners will come on board for Buddy's," said Kelen.

The series is predominantly set in Buddy's downtown bar, which also happens to double as his home, and features a cast of characters including a vindictive city councilwoman, a precocious cat as well as Buddy's bouncer, waiter and best mate.

A gay group has launched an attack on the Pope days before his Good Friday speech where he is expected to condemn gay civil partnerships as "satanic."

The Gay and Lesbian Humanist Association (GALHA) has branded the pontiff’s remarks as "verging on the unhinged."

In his message, Pope Benedict XVI will say that "aggression against the family"
is a “diabolical project,” in what appears to be an allusion to another attack on the legal recognition of gay partnerships around Europe, including Britain.

The outcome of this tolerance, he will say, is "an absurd cult of Satan, a mad desire for transgression, a false liberty without conscience, that exalts caprice, vice and selfishness."

GALHA's secretary George Broadhead said: "We are well aware that the Pope is totally opposed to the rights of gay people, but these latest pronouncements verge on the unhinged. His inhumane arguments against the recognition of gay partnerships have been widely disregarded, even in traditionally Catholic countries, like Spain, and his frustration is beginning to show in the
increasingly extreme language he is employing.

“The Pope's apparent psychotic hatred of gays may not be quite on the same level as that of the Grand Ayatollah of Iraq, who recently issued a fatwa saying that homosexual should be killed in the cruellest ways imaginable, but it springs from the same well of religious intolerance."

Mr Broadhead added: "Gay Catholics should think long and hard before continuing to support their church with money and other resources, until these vile outbursts stop and the Church moderates its stance on gay rights."

Hundreds of gay and lesbian parents and their children will attend the annual White House Easter Egg Roll this weekend. Marking a first for the 130-year-old Easter egg hunt on the South Lawn, the gay families will be among 16,000 others who will attend the free event, as a form of “positive” protest.
Among the Easter Bunny, Sesame Street characters, music and 14,200 painted eggs, the gay families say that they will wear rainbow-hued floral bands around their necks to identify themselves. Tickets are handed out on a first-come, first-served basis.
“For crying out loud — at the Easter Egg Roll? This is a family event,” Andrea Lafferty, the executive director of Traditional Values Coalition, told The New York Times. She said that it was “very distasteful” to politicise the event and to use children to do so.



Toronto, Ontario Canada's broadcast regulator, the CRTC, has awarded an FM license for a Toronto gay radio station.

Although satellite network Sirius already has an LGBT station called Sirius Q and there are a number of internet-based gay station, the Toronto station is believed to be the first conventional station serving the gay community anywhere in North America.

The license was granted to Rainbow Media and is one of a number of new low-wattage stations being created in Canada. With only 50-wats of power the station will be available only in downtown Toronto.

Rainbow Media is owned by Evanov Radio Group, which owns mainstream stations in several Canadian cities, and businessman George Marchi.

Company spokesperson Camela Laurignano said the station will be up and winning within 12 months. It also will stream its broadcast over the Internet.
