MILITARY MONDAY

The U.S. military is aware of a rash of anti-gay killings in Iraq during the past eight months and is taking steps to curtail sectarian violence against all Iraqis, including gays, according to a spokesperson for the U.S. led multinational forces in Iraq.

“If someone is in danger of being slaughtered or persecuted, we do all we can to stop it,” said Army Maj. Joseph Todd Breasseale, chief of the Media Relations Division of the Multinational Corps in Iraq.
At least three men suspected of being gay were gunned down March 20 in the Iraqi city of Ramadi. U.S. forces say they are concerned about the rising number of anti-gay killings in Iraq

The father of a Marine whose funeral was picketed by an anti-gay group is taking them to court.

Albert Synder is seeking unspecified damages against Westboro Baptist Church, who picketed the funeral, accusing its members of "intentional and outrageous" conduct during his son's funeral service.

Mathew Snyder, 20, was killed in Iraq in a non combat vehicle accident in Al Anbar Province.

Craig Trebilcock, representing Mr Synder called the actions of the Westboro church "disruptive and mean-spirited”. The church believes that disasters such as Hurricane Katrina, AIDS, September 11th and military deaths in Iraq are due to the US's tolerance of homosexuality.

Shirley Phelps-Roper, an attorney and church member, said that the church would counter sue "for conspiracy to violate civil rights and violation of civil rights."

"If they think that coming after us is going to fix this, they are sadly mistaken,” Ms Phelps-Roper said. “We are people exercising protected rights of speech and religion."

Westboro Baptist, which has about 75 members has been causing enough distress picketing funerals that it has been restricted from doing so in 22 States. Members of the church have led over 22,000 demonstrations since 1991 but have only recently started picketing funerals.

Seven people marched on public city property outside Snyder's funeral waving placards declaring such messages as "Thank God for dead soldiers."

They also wrote about the family on the church's website, claiming that the soldier's parents; “taught Matthew to defy his creator, to divorce, and to commit adultery. They taught him how to support the largest paedophile machine in the history of the entire world, the Roman Catholic monstrosity”.

Wesley K Mitten, 21, is the 3rd solider from the 82nd Airborne Division to be charged with appearing on a gay military-themed website called Active Duty.

Mitten pleaded guilty to cocaine use, sodomy and conduct detrimental to the army. The soldier is one of seven men who were initially charged with violating the Uniform Code of Military justice.

On January 27th 2006, Fort Bragg in the US State of North Carolina announced that some of the men appearing on the ‘gay-for-pay’ website were from their 82nd Airborne Division.

All the soldiers involved were from the 2nd Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment.

The videos on the Web site, Active Duty usually involve one or a group of military men enjoying solo or mutual masturbation and scenes of penetrative sex.

The dialogue often involves a discussion of the mens’ ‘experimental’ gay encounters.

In court, Mitten claimed the Web site's producer, Dink Flamingo contacted him through the Internet in 2005 and offered him $2,000 (£1,059) to perform in a gay porn shoot.

Mitten admitted to making an additional film, posing for erotic pictures and appearing live before a camera for online broadcasts. He earned $6,000 (£3,179) in three months.

"I am sorry for disgracing my family name and my unit," said Mitten, according to the Fayetteville Observer.

Richard Ashley was the first soldier charged in this case. He was sentenced to 90 days in prison, later reduced to 75 days. Ashley was also demoted to private and given a bad conduct discharge and a two-thirds reduction in pay.

Kagen B Mullen was also charged for appearing on the Web site. As part of a plea deal, prosecutors dropped the original charges of sodomy, pandering and adultery. Married with a young daughter, Mullen enlisted in the Army in 2004 and planned to serve for five years.

The 82nd Airborne said that the four other soldiers, whose names were not released, received non judicial punishment for appearing on the Web site.

They were reduced in rank to private, forfeited half a month's pay for two months, performed extra work and were restricted to Fort Bragg for 45 days.

The U.S. armed forces discharged 742 gay service members last year, an average of about two per day, according to new data from the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network.

According to polls, 51 per cent of Americans do not approve of gay marriage but 70 per cent of Americans do not approve of President Bush. So gay marriage is actually more popular than he is.

Did you notice that gay marriage didn't become a big Republican priority until all of their members started to go to prison?

Speedo Sunday

Snug suits not for shy beach boys
By Jessica Yadegaran
CONTRA COSTA TIMES

Be it a pad on the shoulder or "pelvis-rise" jeans, women tend to submit to trends. Even when they're uncomfortable, unflattering or outlandishly expensive.

Men, on the other hand, aren't always as likely to sacrifice comfort in the name of chic.

Take this summer's "must-have" for men: snug, square-cut swim shorts that sit low on the waist and high on the thigh and thus accentuate nearby vicinities. Think Rock Hudson circa "Pillow Talk."

t's the original boy short -- for boys, of course -- and demand for versions by Versace and Dolce & Gabbana over the past five years has paved the mainstream way. Now Speedo is in on the action. But are guys wearing them?

"It's definitely a trend," says Durand Guion, director of men's fashion for Macy's West in San Francisco, which carries the shorts in a range of styles and price-points. "I think initially the appeal was a bit gay-oriented, but that's changing. It's now for guys who have a great build and like great color, fit and quality."

And, Guion points out, with the standard boardshort becoming a part of street wear -- paired with a hoodie and sneakers -- this is the next step in men's swimwear.

Hit the streets, however, and you get a different take. Jhayson Henderson of Brentwood wakeboards and jet skis, so he took one look at the shorts and said they would "cause too many problems."

"If it doesn't come to my knees, I won't wear it," said Henderson, 24, assessing several samples handed to him. "But I think my girlfriend would look nice in these."

Joshua Burgess, 25, of Danville concurred. "I've got skinny legs and I don't really like to show them," he said.

Barney Frazier winced when he was asked to hold the shorts against his body. "You're telling me these are making a comeback?" asked Frazier, 53, who lives in Hawaii but was spotted shopping in Walnut Creek. "To be honest, you'd never see these in Hawaii. You might see them in Miami, but nowhere else."

That's not true, according to Edie Kelly of International Male, which sells the shorts through its catalog and Web site. The shorts do well because of the body-conscious mentality that came out of the metrosexual boom, she said. But there's also another reason.

"We're becoming more globalized," explains Kelly, vice president of merchandising. "There's plenty of Europeans and Latinos living here and they're more comfortable in their own skin. While we tend to be a bit more provincial, we're becoming more homogenized. But this (customer) is a pretty upscale guy who takes care of himself and is well-traveled and would be less giggly about it."

There's also public versus private swimwear, as in sunbathing at home or on vacation. "I don't think a lot of guys would admit that they buy them, but they do," Kelly said. "Fifteen percent of my business is thongs for men. But no one has ever told me they'd buy a thong."

Visit a public swimming pool and you'll find swarms of the less-giggly type. Members of the Walnut Creek Masters Team took one look at the square-cuts and started grabbing for them.

"They look like drag shorts," said Chris Danesi, 37, of Concord. Sure enough, the most cutting-edge look in men's swimwear is no different than the cover-ups Michael Phelps and other svelte swimmers sport every day.

Chris Horner of Martinez slipped on an army-print pair over his own, smaller drag shorts and around his lean waist. He asked if he could have them.

"I'd wear them around here," he says, referring to the pool at Heather Farm. "And I wouldn't mind putting them on once in a while at the beach."

"Wouldn't mind"? Not very convincing.

"Well," he added, "just because everyone would stare at me."

Gay marriage 3 years old

(Toronto, Ontario) Dozens of same-sex couples celebrated in front of Toronto City Hall on Friday, marking the third anniversary of the landmark court ruling that struck down Canada's ban on gay marriage.

On hand to mark the occasion was federal New Democratic Party Leader Jack Layton, a former Toronto city council member.

On June 10, 2003 the Ontario Court of Appeals - the highest court in the province - ruled that prohibiting gay marriage was a violation of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms of the Canadian Constitution.

The ruling allowed same-sex couples to immediately receive marriage licenses and wed.

"The existing common law definition of marriage violates the couples' equality rights on the basis of sexual orientation under [the charter]," the 61-page written ruling said.

Courts in other provinces followed and the then Liberal federal government said it would not appeal the rulings to the Supreme Court of Canada. Instead it brought in legislation to permit same-sex marriage in all regions of the country. The law was passed last year.

Since the beginning of the toppling of the prohibition on same-sex marriage some 10,000 gay and lesbian couples have wed across the country.

The most weddings were in Ontario where nearly 5,800 couples have tied the knot. British Columbia was next with 3,100. In Nunavut, in the Eastern Arctic one same-sex couple wed.
But if Canada's new Conservative government gets its way the march to the altar for same-sex couples will end. Prime Minister Stephen Harper has pledged to re-open the marriage issue this fall.

Earlier this month he said that MPs will be asked to debate the issue. If there is support in Parliament the government would bring in a repeal bill.

The chances of that are slim. All three opposition parties are opposed to re-opening the issue. The public also is uneasy with it. Recent polls show that most Canadians have grown comfortable with same-sex marriage.

Friday Whitey

In Praise of Boxer Briefs
An underpants manifesto.

By Seth Stevenson

It's come to my attention that there are some men out there—even a few friends of mine—who've not yet switched to boxer briefs. These are otherwise intelligent fellows who, either through ignorance or recalcitrance, begin each day by pulling on (shudder) traditional boxers or (double-shudder) briefs. I feel great pity for these men. Because the irrefutable truth is that boxer briefs—a knit, mid-thigh-length compromise between boxer and brief—are the ultimate male netherwear. The sooner you accept this, the happier your crotch will be.

It's not too late to change. We humans have a terrific capacity for adapting to new underpants. I know, because I've switched styles twice now. Consider my first (though ultimately misguided) underwear revelation:

The time was the mid-1980s, and I was an impressionable tween. I'd worn briefs all my life—those classic, white-cotton Y-fronts—without giving the issue much thought. And then one evening I saw an episode of Moonlighting in which Bruce Willis (as detective David Addison) was somehow de-pantsed (an event which occurred with some frequency on the show, as I recall). He was shown wearing a pair of generously cut, broadcloth boxer shorts, emblazoned with large red hearts.

The billowy boxers were meant to look anachronistic and silly. But this joke was lost on me. Compared to my briefs—which revealed my pale and scrawny pre-teen upper thighs—those modest, roomy boxers looked positively dignified. And cutting-edge, too: My father didn't wear them, thus by definition they were modern and stylish. (I didn't realize at the time that baby-boomer men had switched to briefs in large part to tack away from their own boxers-wearing fathers.)

Soon after, I made the leap. And by the end of high school, in the early 1990s, every teenager I knew was wearing woven cotton boxers. (Often carefully showcased—allowed to peek out below the hem of a pair of shorts.) It's still not clear what sparked this large-scale boxer rebellion. Surely not every young man of my generation was so profoundly affected by Moonlighting. (Though underwear fashions do seem particularly pegged to pop culture. There's that old saw about Clark Gable killing undershirt sales in 1934, when he unbuttoned his shirt in It Happened One Night to reveal a bare chest. Likewise, it was Monica Lewinsky's thong flash that seemed to really galvanize women's rejection of the granny-panty. Theory: Since underwear is concealed in day-to-day life, and we can't see what our neighbors and co-workers are wearing, we have only pop culture to give us our cues.) Nonetheless, boxers remained the near-universal choice of my generation throughout college and into the years beyond.

I now realize, of course, that those were wasted years, groin-comfort-wise. All that time, a better option had awaited. Although by 1993 those iconic Mark Wahlberg print ads for Calvin Klein boxer briefs were in heavy rotation, the famous query put to Bill Clinton in 1994 ("boxers or briefs?") didn't even acknowledge a third possibility. I was aware that the boxer brief existed, yet my naive understanding held that it was a choice open only to the European or the gay.

It wasn't until a forward-thinking friend clued me in ("It's the best of both worlds," he enthused) that I was made aware of the cut's functional superiority. Soon enough, I switched again—this time for good. After just a few days, I could see the boxer brief's profound advantages:

Support. The obvious, yet oft-unspoken flaw with traditional boxers is their lack of cuppage. They are useless for athletic events, and can even be a hindrance. (An acquaintance refers to the "tunnel" created by wearing boxers under soccer shorts. Via this tunnel, one's testicles can gain sudden and direct access to the world outside.) Boxer briefs hold your goods in place and out of sight.

Stability. Traditional boxers never sit still. They are forever riding up above the waistband of your pants, or slipping down below it. That loose fabric tends to twist, and bunch, and wedgify. Constant realignments are required. (This is especially true with the "bubble-butt" cut of boxer, which uses a spinnaker-like central back panel. The idea is to avoid having any seams line up with the butt-crack, but all that extra cloth just crawls up in there anyway, to disastrous effect.)

Containment. That simple slit of a fly on traditional boxers encourages a phenomenon I will term "flop-out." Some boxer shorts seek to rectify this with a button enclosure, but a button is the last thing you care to deal with when you urgently need to urinate. Boxer briefs use the much more effective and user-friendly Y-front.

Aesthetics. My unscientific polling suggests that ladies dig 'em. While it has all the comfort, support, and fit of a knit brief, the boxer brief's full-cut thigh lends it the modesty of a traditional boxer. And that thigh is functional, too—its snug, ribbed cuff serves to hold the garment in place. This prevents the boxer brief from riding up or (worse) burrowing into one's posterior cleavage. (The Calvin Klein boxer brief is particularly well-tailored, and is my personal choice. I own one pair of boxer briefs from 2(x)ist, bought at the little store in my gym when I forgot to bring a change of underwear, but I find they take an overly presentational approach to the genitalia. Sort of a push-up effect.)

I'm confident there's really nothing the boxer brief can't do better. But just to make sure, I recently revisited the other underwear alternatives, to see if I was missing something.

Step 1 in my research was to buy a pair of Brooks Brothers briefs in a lovely, mercerized white cotton for $14.99. When I first slipped them on, I found them incredibly comfortable. And even a bit stylish, with that racy curve tracing the cup of the buttock. But all the old problems pertained. I felt naked, and also like a 7-year-old. I could tell that the bright white cotton would quickly dull to beige. Worst of all, the briefs crept way up over the course of a long day. Verdict: Too tighty, and too soon not-whitey.

Next, I picked up a pair of plaid boxers from Burberry's for $45. I felt as dapper as anyone can feel when dressed only in underwear. But the boxers simply wouldn't remain in place under my pants, always migrating 30 degrees around my waist in one direction or the other. The leg-openings would ride up and accordion, leaving weird marks on my thighs. And while Burberry's model prevented "flop-out" with a button enclosure, I found myself leaving the button undone. Who wants the bother? Verdict: Classic preppie choice—looks sharp, underachieves.

I've also tried trunks. There seems to be some disagreement as to what this term means, but my understanding is that trunks have an abbreviated thigh-length and no fly opening at all. I bought two pairs that qualify while traveling in the Netherlands last year. (I'd run out of clean underwear. The vast majority of men's underwear purchases, I suspect, are born of desperate and immediate need.) Trunks have many of the same benefits as boxer briefs, but I can't understand the lack of a fly opening. Standing at a urinal, you're forced to reach through the fly of your trousers and pry the trunks' elastic waistband down with your thumb. Should you lose your purchase on the waistband, it will snap back violently—with messy and painful results.

Some men endorse going commando. I find it thoroughly unhygienic. Also rife with potential for injury. No dice.

I couldn't bring myself to try on a thong. I realize this is a viable choice for men these days (perhaps even some straight men), but it's just not for me. I have no need to prevent panty lines. And, more fundamentally: Half of what I'm looking for from underwear is wedgie avoidance. What is the thong if not a permanent wedgie? No doubt, future generations of men will adopt the thong as a comfortable, minimalist alternative and will urge me to ditch my fusty old boxer briefs.

Until then, I beseech you: Make the boxer-briefs switch. You, and your groin, will not be sorry.

The OJ sex tape

O.J. Simpson denies sex tape involvement

O.J. Simpson's attorney says the man on a sex tape who looks an awful lot like The Juice is "an impostor," according to the New York Daily News.

The video, which is selling online for $19.95 at BadOJ.com, captures a man bearing an uncanny resemblance to Simpson having cocktails in a hotel room with two women. Later in the 25-minute video, a man with Simpson's build is shown in a menage a trois, although his face isn't visible.

The tape, according to BadOJ.com's David Hans Schmidt of Phoenix, Ariz., has Simpson dishing out one-liners like "I'm a sexaholic!" and repeatedly singing the Straw Man's "If I Only Had a Brain."

"This tape is garbage," Simpson attorney Yale Galanter told the Daily News, "and we can prove it. O.J. wouldn't do anything like this."

Schmidt, meanwhile, has responded: "There's no question in my mind the real O.J. is having sex on this tape. ... People can make their own judgment."

In 2001, the tabloid magazine Globe reported that Simpson had arranged to make a sex video with two women, including a Playboy model, at the Mutiny Hotel in Miami, using hidden cameras. The Globe also printed photos of Simpson entering and leaving the hotel. Galanter has maintained all along that the Globe report was all a setup, and that Simpson, who is confirmed to have joined two women in a room at the Mutiny that night, had "hightailed it out of the room" after noticing a small hidden camera.

Schmidt could not confirm whether the video in question was filmed that night at the Mutiny Hotel, and Galanter said Simpson will go to court to block release of the tape.

Gay Love-Letters from Tchaikovsky to his Nephew Bob Davidov

Gay men have taken to their hearts the music of Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840-93) because it is perceived (rightly or wrongly) to contain all the longing and despair of homosexual angst in a homophobic world. Although he was one of the great musical thinkers, it is for the melodic lyricism and suffering so audible in his work, rather than its complexity or brilliance, that he will be remembered.

Tchaikovsky as a young man Tchaikovsky's homosexuality was denied by Soviet musicologists until fairly recently, and much material still remains to be retrieved from Russian archives and published in English. His lovers included Alexey Apukhtin in his music student days 1867-70; Vladimir Shilovsky, a wealthy young lad whom he also met at the Moscow Conservatory, during 1868-72, and who financed several trips for the two of them; Alexei Sofronov his valet from 1872 to the end of his life; his pupil Eduard Zak, who killed himself in 1873 (he inspired the Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture); Joseph Kotek in the mid-1870s; his nephew Vladimir Davidov (second son of his sister Alexandra) in the 1880s-1890s, to whom he dedicated the Symphonie Pathétique (1893); and the young pianist Vassily Sapelnikov who went with him on a tour to Germany, France and England. In addition, many brief affairs are recorded in his cryptographic diary; e.g. on March 22, 1889 he records that a ‘Negro came in to me’, to his hotel room in Paris.

But Tchaikovsky was uneasy about his sexuality – unlike his brother Modest, who was also gay, and who lived relatively openly with his boyfriend Nikolai (‘Kolia’) Hermanovich Konradi (1868-1923), a deaf and dumb boy whom Modest tutored and with whom he lived for about seventeen years from 1876. During a mid-life crisis at the age of thirty-six, Piotr wrote to his brother:

I am now going through a very critical period of my life. I will go into more detail later, but for now I will simply tell you, I have decided to get married. It is unavoidable. I must do it, not just for myself but for you, Modeste, and all those I love. I think that for both of us our dispositions are the greatest and most insuperable obstacle to happiness, and we must fight our natures to the best of our ability. So far as I am concerned, I will do my utmost to get married this year, and if I lack the necessary courage, I will at any rate abandon my habits forever. Surely you realize how painful it is for me to know that people pity and forgive me when in truth I am not guilty of anything. How appalling to think that those who love me are sometimes ashamed of me. In short, I seek marriage or some sort of public involvement with a woman so as to shut the mouths of assorted contemptible creatures whose opinions mean nothing to me, but who are in a position to cause distress to those near to me.

Tchaikovsky married Antonina Milyukova in 1877, but frankly told his wife he did not love her though he would be her devoted friend. Not surprisingly, the marriage ended disastrously after a few months, which brought Tchaikovsky close to a nervous breakdown and helped him accept his unchangable sexual nature and stop tormenting himself.

It is possible that Tchaikovsky married Milyukova ‘on the rebound’ after being rejected by some male lover. At the time, he was busy composing Tatiana's Letter Scene in his opera Eugene Onegin. He very clearly identified with Tatiana, who had been rejected by her lover Onegin. He had recently responded to a letter from Milyukova and had agreed to meet with her, but he pointedly notes in a letter to his brother Modest that he had entirely forgotten about Milyukova when working on his opera:

I didn't ask any more about Mlle Milyukova. I was entirely preoccupied at the time with thoughts about Eugene Onegin, i.e. with Tatiana whose letter had originally drawn me to composing the opera. I began writing the letter song, driven to the work by an irresistible emotional need, in the heat of which I not only forgot about Antonina Milyukova, but even lost her letter or hid it so successfully that I couldn't find it. I remembered about it only when a little later I received the second one. I was completely buried in my composition and had grown so close to the character of Tatiana that she and all around her started to seem real to me. I loved Tatiana and was terribly angry with Onegin, whom I saw as simply cold and heartless. When I received the second letter, I was ashamed, and even came to hate myself for my attitude toward Mlle Milyukova. In this second letter she bitterly complained that she had not received a reply, adding that if the second letter met with the same fate as the first, the only course open to her was to take her own life. In my mind this all got associated with my conception of Tatiana, and it seemed to me as if I myself had behaved infinitely worse than Onegin.

But when he finally met Milyukova, the first thing he told her was ‘I could not return her love’. It is clear that the heart-rending Letter Scene was not inspired by Milyukova, but that his identification with Tatiania compelled him to agree to marry Milyukova, for fear of being as heartless as Onegin. Thus his identification with a female paradoxically made him temporarily reject his desires for a male, or, rather, his desire to be desired by a man like Onegin.

Tchaikovsky with his nephew Bob DavidovVladimir Lvovich Davïdov (1871/2-1906) – Tchaikovsky’s nephew nicknamed ‘Bob’ [illustrated at the right] – became his lover from the late 1880s. Tchaikovsky was always homesick during his musical tours abroad – he hated the loneliness of large cities – and he always longed to get back home to be with his beloved nephew – ‘my idol’ – whom he made his heir. His letter to Bob from a hotel room in London in May 1893 shows this correspondence to have been his life-line: ‘I am writing to you with a voluptuous pleasure. The thought that this paper is going to be in your hands fills me with joy and brings tears to my eyes.’ Later that year ‘Kolia’ chucked out Modest, and there were plans to set up an apartment in St Petersburg where Modest, Piotr and Bob would live together.

But it was not to be, for in November 1893, less than a month after the premiere of the Symphonie Pathétique, Tchaikovsky was murdered. It was reported that he died from cholera, caused by drinking an unboiled glass of water. On November 1 (New Style; the Russian Old Style calendar was twelve days behind this) he dined at a restaurant with Bob after seeing a play, and insisted on being brought a glass of water even though it was unboiled and even though his friends remonstrated with him. (Another version has it that he ran to the kitchen in Modest’s apartment to get the unboiled water, shouting ‘Who cares anyway!’) On November 2 he fell ill, and on November 6 he was dead, from kidney failure and dehydration caused by vomiting and diarrhoea. But death from cholera cannot possibly occur so soon after an infection, and even Rimsky-Korsakov, who paid his respects to the composer’s body in Modest’s apartment, thought it was strange that the apartment had not been disinfected and that people were even allowed to kiss the corpse despite government regulations that required that the coffin be sealed in cases of cholera. Rumors of suicide began to fly. In the 1920s one of the doctors who attended him, Vasily Bertenson, admitted that Tchaikovsky had poisoned himself.

Tchaikovsky at the height of his fameThe facts of Tchaikovsky's death were revealed to the West by Alexandra Orlova, a Soviet musical scholar who emigrated to the USA in 1979. It was privately known in Soviet musical circles in the 1920s and 1930s (including people such as Alexander Glazunov) that Tchaikovsky had not died of cholera, but had killed himself. In 1966 Alexander Voitov, a pupil and historian of the St Petersburg School of Jurisprudence, told Orlova what really happened. In 1913 he was told by the widow of Nikolay Jacobi that she had a terrible secret she did not wish to take to the grave. In autumn 1893 Duke Stenbok-Fermor wrote a letter addressed to Tsar Alexander III complaining of the attentions the composer was paying his (the Duke's) young nephew; this letter was handed to the civil servant Jacobi to pass on to the Tsar. Exposure would have meant loss of civil rights and exile to Siberia, and public disgrace not only for Tchaikovsky, but for his fellow former students of the School of Jurisprudence. Instead of passing on the letter, Jacobi assembled a court of honor of the old boys of the school and summoned Tchaikovsky to his apartment. Jacobi's wife could hear loud voices behind the closed door, and after a meeting that lasted five hours Tchaikovsky ran unsteadily from the room, very white and agitated. When the others had gone Jacobi told his wife that the court of honor had required Tchaikovsky to kill himself and he had promised to comply with their demand. A day or two later his illness was reported. Nataliya Kuznetsova-Fladimova, the granddaughter of the sister of the wife of Tchaikovsky’s eldest brother Nikolay, after reading Orlova’s account in 1987, told her that the story was true, and was the same story told by her grandmother who died very old in 1955. Her grandmother also said that Tsar Alexander III was shown the incriminating letter to Count Stenbok after Tchaikovsky’s death.

The prominence given to the supposedly infected glass of water shows it to have been a symbolic leave-taking; the major Tchaikovsky biographer David Brown calls it ‘a very public demonstration of something happening, to give an explanation for something that was going to happen in due course.’ Tchaikovsky's most recent biographer Alexander Poznansky rejects the court of honor story because he does not believe such things could happen in the civilized society that Russia was at this time. Poznansky even points out that there were other homosexuals in the School of Jurisprudence, such as the statesman Vladimir Meshesvsky, who was protected by the Tsar after being denounced for seducing a bugle boy in the imperial marching band, However, trying to seduce the son of Count Stenbok might well have been considered more reprehensible and damaging to the public image of the School. In any event, the historian Simon Karlinsky has proved that courts of honor did in fact exist at the time (though usually they only demanded resignations etc., as when Chekhov’s editor was called to a court of honor). Karlinsky acknowledges that the Russian law against homosexuality – more specifically, Paragraph 995 which prohibited mujilostra or anal intercourse between men – was not very often enforced. Nevertheless, there was a very notable scandal during Tchaikovsky’s day, when a teacher who had seduced many teenage boys was tried and convicted, and exiled to the provincial city of Seratov for five years. (The maximum penalty was resettlement in Siberia for a period of five years.) Tolstoy in his book Resurrection mentions the case of a prominent homosexual who escapes legal punishment, and calls this a case of ‘evil triumphant’. In other words, homosexuality was neither legal nor respectable in Russia, In any case Tchaikovsky’s own comments quoted at the beginning of this essay indicate that a suspicion of homosexuality was often used to shame people. And he often felt shame, or at least regret, over his own homosexuality, writing in his diary, for example, ‘What can I do to be normal?’ The enigmatic Fate motif in his Fourth Symphony probably stands for the ‘tragic curse’ of his homosexual orientation.

Poznansky does not adequately account for the inconsistencies in the cholera story, which seems to have been concocted to hide the truth and to avoid the stigma of suicide. Everyone at his death bed gave conflicting accounts of exactly what happened, and one of the doctors’ accounts suggests he died one day sooner than that reported. The Swiss musicologist Aloys Mooser and the French scholar André Lischke were both informed that Glazunov confirmed that Tchaikovsky was homosexual and had committed suicide, but Poznansky dismisses the accounts of Bertenson and others because they were reported orally after their deaths. When each claim is examined in isolation, it is admittedly ‘weak’, but since all of the claims confirm one another despite coming from different sources, they add up to ‘strong’ evidence in my opinion. Do a dozen weak links add up to a chain? Well, yes, they do.

In November 1993 the BBC broadcast a documentary on the death of Tchaikovsky, called ‘Pride or Prejudice,’ which interviewed Orlova, Brown, Poznansky and Karlinsky and various experts on Russian history, and concluded largely in favor of the theory that Tchaikovsky had been sentenced to death, ordered to do the decent thing. Dr John Henry of Guy's Hospital, who works in the British National Poison Unit, concluded that all the reported symptoms of Tchaikovsky's illness ‘fit very closely with arsenic poisoning,’ and he suggested that people would have known that acute diarrhoea, dehydration and kidney failure resembled the manifestions of cholera which would help them put the death over as a case of cholera.

There is a similar argument about the truth behind Tchaikovsky’s sixth and last symphony, the Pathétique, which some find profoundly enigmatic and some find profoundly self-revealing: a longing to reveal something, a sense of tragic destiny, a struggle for happiness defeaed by implacable ‘fate’, i.e. oppression, a union of defiance and despair with which many gay men have identified at least until the 1970s. Tchaikovsky decided not to leave a detailed programmatic explanation of his darkest work: ‘Let them guess!’ he told Modest. The last movement, the Adagio Lamentoso, is prophetic not only of Tchaikovsky’s own death, but also that of its dedicatee, Bob Davïdov, who became curator of the Tchaikovsky Museum at his uncle’s home in Klin, and who killed himself, at the age of thirty-five.

Things have gone so far that it is quite impossible to write letters. Not a free moment, and I scarcely manage to write my diary. I made a trip to Niagara. As soon as I returned I had to visit one Mayer at his country house and pay some visits in the few free hours I had left. Then I was invited out to lunch. Altogether I have been frightfully busy, and I am completely numb with exhaustion. Tonight I have to be at a big dinner, and then leave at midnight for Baltimore; tomorrow a rehearsal and concert there, the day after that Washington, then Philadelphia, then two days here, where all my time is already booked, and at last, on the morning of the 21st, I leave. Oh God! Will I ever come to that happy moment!!!

In about a week after you receive this letter I will be with you!!! This seems an unattainable, impossible happiness! I try to think of it as little as possible, to have enough strength to stand up to the last insufferable days. But in spite of all I feel that I shall remember America with love. Everybody has been wonderfully kind.

Here are a few newspaper cuttings. Shall bring many more with me. I think that you will all much prefer reading my diary than getting only short news from my letters.

I embrace you all.

Bob!

As promised I can report that I finished the sketches for the ballet yesterday evening. You remember how, when you were here, I boasted that I had only about five days work left. How wrong I was, for I barely managed it in two weeks. No! the old man is definitely deteriorating. Not only is his hair thinning and as white as snow; not only are his teeth falling out and refusing to chew; not only is his sight deteriorating and his eyes getting tired; not only are his legs beginning to drag –p but the only faculty he has is beginning to fade and disappear. . . . I get very tired if I read in the evenings – it always results in a frightful headache. But unless I read I don't know how else to kill time at night. This (I mean headaches as a result of reading), is becoming a serious obstacle to life in the country, which made me decide to look for a place to live that was not in the suburbs of Petersburg but in the town itself. In general I think it would be simpler to settle in Petersburg for good. Just the possibility alone to be able to see more of you is so vitally important for me. I would love to know what you are doing. Write at least a few words. . . .

Klin, District of Moscow

I am definitely coming to Kamenka, for I feel from your letter that you would like me to come, and also because I have a great desire to see you. . . .

You are not at all like an empty suitcase. There are plenty of things in it but they are still kept in disorder and it will take time to decide and sort out those that are important. However, stop worrying, for it will all sort itself out. Enjoy your youth and learn to cherish time; the longer I live the more frightened I get at the aimless dissipation of this prieless element of life. This rather high-flown sentence is nothing more than the advice to read as much as possible. You have an excellent gift of assimilating what you have read, I mean you do not forget it but put it away in a sort of mental store-room until you need it. I do not possess such a store-room. To be honest – no memory at all. Am sending several numbers of the Fliegende Blätter.

I embrace you, my idol!

Paris
12-24 January 1892

I feel an awful fool. Here I have another two weeks without anything to help me kill time. I thought this would be easier in Paris than anywhere else but, except for the first day, I have been bored. Since yesterday I do not know what to think up to be free of the worry and boredom that come from idleness. . . . Am still keeping my incognito. . . .

I often think of you and see you in my dreams, usually looking sad and depressed. This has added a feeling of compassion to my love for you and makes me love you even more. Oh God! How I want to see you this very minute. Write me a letter from College during some boring lecture and send it to this address (14, Rue Richepanse). It will still reach me as I am staying here for nearly two weeks.

I embrace you with mad tenderness.

Yours
P. Tchaikovsky

My dear Golubchik!

I have just received your letter, and was terribly pleased to hear that you are in a happy state of mind. Could it be that one of my letters to you has been lost? I did not write very often but I did write. With all my soul I long to join you, and think about it all the time. But what can I do? There are more and more complications and more work every day. . . .

So all I can say is that it is impossible for me to leave before I have finished all my business in Moscow.

I embrace you to suffocation!!!

I have just received the Paris photographs from Yurgenson and have told him to send four of them to you. I was so glad to see what a good likeness they were that I nearly started crying in the presence of Yurgenson. All this proof correction had completely destroyed all other feelings and thoughts and it had to be this little incident which made me feel again how strong my love for you is. . . . Oh God! How I want to see you.

I embrace you.

Berlin
16-28 December 1892

I am still sitting in Berlin. I haven't got enough energy to leave – especially as there is no hurry. These last days I have been considering and reflecting on matters of great importance. I looked perfectly objectively through my new symphony and was glad that I had neither orchestrated it or launched it; it makes a quite unfavourable impression. . . . What must I do? Forget about composing? Too difficult to say. So here I am, thinking, and thinking, and thinking, and not knowing what to decide. Whatever happens these last three days were unhappy ones.

I am however, quite well, and have at last decided to leave for Basle tomorrow. You wonder why I am writing about all this to you? Just an irresistible longing to chat with you. . . . The weather is quite warm. I can picture you sitting in your room, scented nearly to suffocation, working at your college exercises. How I would love to be in that dear room! Give my love to everybody.

I embrace you.
P. Tchaikovsky

If only I could give way to my secret desire, I would leave everything and go home.

Klin
11 February 1893

If you do not want to write, at least spit on a piece of paper, put it in an envelope, and send it to me. You are not taking any notice of me at all. God forgive you – all I wanted was a few words from you.

I am going to Moscow tonight. The concert will be on the 14th. On the 15th I shall be going to Nijny-Novgorod for about three days and from there straight to Petersburg. About the end of the second week in Lent, therefore, I shall be with you.

I want to tell you about the excellent state of mind I'm in so far as my works are concerned. You know that I destroyed the symphony I had composed and partly orchestrated in the autumn. And a good thing too! There was nothing of interest in it – an empty play of sounds, without inspiration. Now, on my journey, the idea of a new symphony came to me, this time one with a programme, but a programme that will be a riddle for everyone. Let them try and solve it. The work will be entitled A Programme Symphony (No. 6) Symphonie à Programme (No. 6), Eine Programmsinfonie (Nr. 6) [Modest suggested the title finally adopted, Symphonie Pathétique]. The programme of this symphony is completely saturated with myself and quite often during my journey I cried profusely. Having returned I have settled down to write the sketches and the work is going so intensely, so fast, that the first movement was ready in less than four days, and the others have taken shape in my head. Half of the third movement is also done. There will still be much that is new in the form of this work and the finale is not to be a loud allegro, but the slowest adagio. You cannot imagine my feelings of bliss now that I am convinced that the time has not gone forever, and that I can still work. Of course, I may be wrong, but I do not think so. Please, do not tell anyone, except Modest.

I purposely address the letter to the College, so that no one shall read it. Does all this really interest you? It sometimes seems to me that you are not interested at all and that you have no real sympathy for me. Good-bye, my dear. . . .

Yours
P. Tchaikovsky

London
17-29 May 1893

I am writing to you with a voluptuous pleasure. The thought that this paper is going to be in your hands fills me with joy and brings tears to my eyes. Is it not curious that I voluntarily inflict upon myself all these tortures? What the devil do I want it all for? Several times yesterday, on my way, I wanted to run away; but somehow I felt ashamed to return empty-handed. Yesterday my tortures reached such a pitch that I lost both appetite and sleep and this happens very rarely. I am suffering not only from anguish and distress which cannot be expressed in words (in my new symphony there is a place which I think expresses it very well) but also from a vague feeling of fear and the devil only knows what else. The physical symptoms are pains at the bottom of my bowels, and aching and weakness in the legs. So, definitely, this is the last time I am going through all this. From now on I shall agree to go anywhere only for a very large sum of money and not for more than three days. . . .

Klin
3 [or 2] August 1893

In my last letter to Modest I complain that you don't want to know me, and now he is silent too, and all links with your crowd are completely broken. . . .

What makes me sad is that you take so little interest in me. Could it be that you are positively a hard egotist? However, forgive me, I won't pester you again. The symphony which I was going to dedicate to you (not so sure that I shall now) is getting on. I am very pleased with the music but not entirely satisfied with the instrumentation. It does not come out as I hoped it would. It will be quite conventional and no surprise if this symphony is abused and unappreciated – that has happened before. But I definitely find it my very best, and in particular the most sincere of all my compositions. I love it as I have never loved any of my musical children.

. . . At the end of August I shall have to go abroad for a week. If I were sure that you would still be in Verbovka in September I would love to come at the beginning of the month. But I know nothing about you.

I embrace you with all my love.

Circle jerk

A circle jerk usually refers to a group of boys or men masturbating together. The participants may or may not masturbate each other.

Sometimes this may be in the form of a game. Participants may masturbate themselves in a challenge to see who can ejaculate first and be declared the winner. Other times, one is to masturbate his opponent and the one who ejaculates first is instead declared the loser and may have to eat the other's semen.

This sometimes involves a contest to see who can ejaculate first on a piece of bread or biscuit. The last to ejaculate may be forced to eat the semen soaked biscuit, commonly called a "limp biscuit" or, more commonly, a "soggy biscuit". In Australia, the term "soggy sao" is also used, referring to the popular biscuit produced by Arnott's. This is often an urban legend associated with fraternity initiation of pledges. Among adolescents, or men with adolescent sensibilities, there may also be a cash prize for the victor, from a collected "kitty."

An alternate form of this is called a line jerk, where two or more men are standing in a line masturbating each other, either facing one another or not facing one another.

An alternative to a line jerk is called a "reach round", where two men stand in line front to back and the man at the back reaches round to masturbate the other while "grinding" his own erection into the vertical crease of the others buttocks as a prelude or alternative to anal penetration.

Masturbation in history and society

Religion

In many religions, such as some forms of Conservative Protestantism, Catholicism, Mormonism, Judaism and Islam masturbation is regarded as an impure practice.

It has been reported by Rolling Stone [9] that a small Christian-right group in America is encouraging people to wear a masturband to indicate a commitment to abstinence from masturbation.

Buddhism

In the Buddhist tradition, under the Five Precepts and the Eightfold Path, one should neither be attached to nor crave sensual pleasure. For the lay person, masturbation is therefore neither forbidden nor encouraged[10]. Fully ordained Buddhist monks may, depending on the tradition, be bound by hundreds of detailed rules or vows that may include a ban on sexual relations and masturbation.

Judaism

In the Bible masturbation is not explicitly prohibited. The Talmud however forbids masturbation, as it leads to unnecessary spilling of semen, or the impure thoughts of another. This prohibition is derived from the Biblical narrative of Onan (Talmud Niddah 13a). The Talmud (ibid) likens the act to murder and idolatry. There are those that argue, however, that the wrath displayed by God toward Onan was invoked not through the act of spilling semen, but through disobedience to God's command for Onan to impregnate his wife. There is disagreement between the poskim (decisors of Jewish law) whether masturbation is an acceptable way of procuring semen for artificial insemination or in vitro fertilisation.

Catholicism

The Catechism of the Catholic Church lists masturbation as one of the "Offenses Against Chastity" and calls it "an intrinsically and gravely disordered action" because "use of the sexual faculty, for whatever reason, outside of marriage is essentially contrary to its purpose, however when done with no marriage or confines involved, does not penalize those performing the act." Indulging in the act, in this case, is considered more immoral than the act itself.

Protestantism

Protestant theologians only began revising previous teachings toward the middle of the 20th century with some today even taking pro-masturbation viewpoints. Masturbation, however, is still viewed by some denominations as an act of self indulgence and a sin of the flesh, making it a contentious issue to this day.

Islam

Istimna (استمناء) is the Islamic term for masturbation. It is totally forbidden and not allowed under any circumstances in the Shi'ite sect. The four Sunni schools of jurisprudence (known as mazheb) have differing stances on the issue. Some consider it forbidden in all cases. Some see it forbidden in certain cases but obligatory in others. Another view is that it is Makruh but not expressly forbidden. Scholars of Islam consider masturbation to be forbidden (haraam), except in extenuating circumstances, although there is no explicit statement in the Quran that forbids one from masturbation.

Tasty Tuesday.... 666 The day of the beast

The better than sex cake

3 sticks butter (margarine will not do) 1 (4oz. bar German's chocolate, grated3 cups sugar 3 cups flour
5 eggs 1 tsp. baking powder
1 (8 oz.) carton sour cream 1 (6 oz.) pkg chocolate chips
1/4 cup milk 1/2 cup chopped pecans

Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs and beat 4 minutes at medium speed. Stir in sour cream, milk, and grated chocolate; mix well. Add sifted flour and baking powder; beat well. Stir in chocolate chips and nuts.

Bake in a greased and floured (I use cracker crumbs) tube pan at 325 degrees until it tests done. Ice with a chocolate frosting or the following:

2 sq. melted chocolate 1/4 cup milk
1/2 stick butter 3/4 box confectioners sugar
1 tsp. vanilla

Beat well.

The following is a list of foods and drinks are considered to have aphrodisiac qualities with stimulating properties on the erogenous zones and sexually excite and stimulate the libido.

Chocolate, Ginseng, Oysters, Caviar, Celery, Clove, Grapes, Fennel, Almonds, Avocados, Bananas, Walnuts, Ginger, Nutmeg, Chili, Chickpeas, Horseradish, Saffron, Vanilla, and Asparagus (Turns women OFF - Turns men ON)

Horny Goat Weed – Herbal Plant That Would Make You Horny?

Behind the funny name of horny goat weed stands a time-tested aphrodisiac that increases libido in men and women, and improves erectile function in men. Known also as Epimedium or Yin Yang Huo...
Horny Goat Weed (Epimedium sp.) has a two thousand year history of use as a sex-enhancer. Behind the funny name of horny goat weed stands a time-tested aphrodisiac that increases libido in men and women, and improves erectile function in men. Known also as Epimedium or Yin Yang Huo, horny goat weed was first described in ancient classical Chinese medicinal texts. Today, horny goat weed holds an important place in Traditional Chinese Medicine and is gaining popularity around the world as it becomes incorporated in Western medicine.
The leaves of Horny Goat Weed contain a variety of flavonoids, polysaccharides, lignans, sesquiterpenes, phenolic and penethylol glycosides, ionones, sterols, and an alkaloid called magnaflorine. Used by practitioners for over 2,000 years, horny goat weed is several species of epimedium, a leafy plant which grows in the wild, most abundantly at higher altitudes. And while the exact way that horny goat weed works is still being researched, the plant has long been employed to restore sexual fire, boost erectile function, allay fatigue and alleviate menopausal discomfort.

11 Foods That LITERALLY Make You HORNY!!

1- Celery
While it may not be the first food that comes to mind when it comes to sex, celery can be a fantastic source food for sexual stimulation, as it contains androsterone, an odorless hormone released through male perspiration that turns gay men on.
How to enjoy it: Celery is best eaten raw. Wash and cut some, and munch away.

2- Raw oysters
This is one of the classic sexy foods. Oysters are high in zinc, which raises sperm and testosterone production. Oysters also contain dopamine, a hormone that increases sexual fun. The experience of shucking a raw oyster is erotic. Try incorporating it into your foreplay -- feed him and have him feed you. The slippery taste sensation and the mere act of shucking it should get you both in the mood.
How to enjoy them: Scrub the shells thoroughly to get any dirt/bacteria off. Pry them open and place them on a bed of ice, squeeze some fresh lemon onto them if you like, and then start shucking away.

3- Bananas
Bananas contain the bromelain enzyme, which is believed to improve male libido. Additionally, they are good sources of potassium and B vitamins like riboflavin, which increase the body's overall energy levels.
How to enjoy them: Place them on a dish in various states of "undress" and have your man slowly eat some for you. Then gobble yours down and get to work.

4- Avocado
The Aztecs called the avocado tree ahuacatl or "testicle tree." While avocados can indeed look like that body part, they contain high levels of folic acid, which helps metabolize proteins, thus giving you more energy. They also contain vitamin B6 (a nutrient that increases male hormone production) and potassium , two elements that help enhance male libido.
How to enjoy it: Cut one in half, scoop out the insides with your fingers, and then get your man to lick it off.

5- Almonds (or nuts in general)
Almonds are a prime source of essential fatty acids. These are vital as they provide the raw material for a man's healthy production of hormones. Try lighting some almond-scented candles to encourage his mood and snack on some (but not too many) yourself to store up energy for your performance.
How to enjoy them: Eat them raw (with no added salt or sweetness). Or, crush some fresh almonds and sprinkle them on your salad to get the energy you need.

Onto some fruit, eggs and other things you won't believe...

6- Mangoes, peaches, strawberries
What can be more fun than sinking your teeth into a drippy, sticky-sweet fruit? Probably doing that as a prelude to (or during) sex. All of the above fruits and their shapes, textures and succulence are erotically suggestive and can be fun to use amid foreplay. Try dribbling the juices over your bodies and licking up the residue as an erotic game. It makes for a great (and tasty) way to discover each other's bodies.
How to enjoy them: Peel the mango, cut the peach and slice up some strawberries, and feed your man while he's giving you oral sex.

7- Eggs
Although not the most sensual of foods, eggs are high in vitamins B6 and B5. These help balance hormone levels and fight stress, two things that are crucial to a healthy libido. Eggs are also a symbol of fertility and rebirth. Some people will eat raw chicken eggs just prior to sex to increase their libido and maximize energy levels. But all bird and fish eggs contain B6 and B5.
How to enjoy them: Have some caviar and (a bit of) champagne during your fun or gobble down some hard-boiled eggs beforehand.

8- Liver
A good source of glutamine -- a cellular fuel for your immune system -- liver may indeed increase a slowed-down libido. Granted, it's not the sexiest of foods, but if you add it to your basic diet, your body -- and your man -- will thank you for it.
How to enjoy it: Try frying liver up in a pan with some onions, spices and olive oil to make the taste more agreeable.

9- Figs
These are high in amino acids, which are believed to increase libido. They can also improve sexual stamina. Furthermore, the shape of a fresh fig and the sweet, juicy taste are two tangible aspects that are highly pleasurable to the human senses.
How to enjoy them: Feed him some fresh figs and let the juices run all over while you're both getting revved up

10- Garlic
Yes, you might need to stock up on some extra breath mints, but it'll be worth it. Garlic contains allicin, an ingredient that increases blood flow to the sexual organs. As such, it's a highly effective herb for increasing libido. If the odor just won't work for you, or you can't stand garlic, you and your man can always take garlic capsules instead.
How to enjoy it: Well, chances are you can't enjoy garlic and sex simultaneously, so take some capsules and get it over with.

11- Chocolate
Chocolate contains theobromine -- an alkaloid -- which is very similar to caffeine. It also contains phenylethylamine, a chemical believed to produce the feeling of "being in love." So when your man talks about how good chocolate makes him feel, there is some science behind it. In addition, dark chocolate has a massive amount of anti-oxidants, which are great for the body in general, as they help maintain the immune system.
How to enjoy it: From chocolate bars to chocolate fondue, as long as it's chocolate, you and your man will be in for a tasty session.
